Airwallex review (2026): the honest read

Prices checked: July 31, 2026 By Andrew

The short version

The Reddit thread ranking for this query says 'avoid'; G2 says 4.5 stars. Both are half-right: Airwallex is excellent infrastructure with a brutal onboarding filter. If it accepts you, it's arguably the best multi-currency account in class.

The onboarding filter — the real story

Airwallex underwrites like a bank, not a signup form: established trading history is effectively required, and document requests continue after approval. Their published “Unsupported Industries” list names the hard exclusions — adult content, gambling, payday lending, MLM and telemarketing, unlicensed products — and ends with a catch-all worth reading twice: anything “outside of our risk appetite” per their internal and banking partners’ policies. That’s the filter working as designed — and it’s what the angriest threads describe:

“Unless you are already an established company, they won’t be able to help — they will ask for the last three months’ statements.”1↑ · u/The_Lone_Snorkeler · thread
“You’ll spend half your working hours providing commercially sensitive info for any and all deposits and transfers. Avoid them.”3↑ · u/nick1it1 · thread
“Airwallex shut down our business account in 6 hours. No warning, no explanation.”55↑ · u/OP · thread · the thread title

Read together: if your profile is borderline — young company, high-risk category, thin history — the honest advice is not “prepare better documents” but “expect friction or rejection, and hold a fallback account”.

Airwallex vs Wise Business

Wise is the safer default: instant self-serve onboarding, transparent mid-market-plus-fee pricing, and it tolerates small and young businesses. Airwallex wins on infrastructure — 0.5% FX on majors beats Wise at volume, free local rails in 120+ countries, real API and spend controls — but only for companies that clear its underwriting. Rule of thumb from the threads and the math: under ~$20k/mo of FX, take Wise and never think about it; above that, Airwallex’s spread advantage starts paying for its paperwork.

Who gets burned

  • borderline-risk business categories — expect rejection or review holds;
  • anyone needing support-by-phone: per user reports it's chat and email only — no phone line.
