Gusto vs ADP (2026): real prices, clear winner by case

Prices checked: July 31, 2026 By Andrew

The short version

Gusto publishes prices; ADP quotes them. A 10-person team costs a published $109/mo on Gusto Simple; ADP’s number exists only after a sales call — and that asymmetry is information in itself. Still, ADP earns its premium in two specific cases below.

The pricing asymmetry, documented

Gusto’s pricing page shows three plans with numbers; ADP’s shows a form asking for your name, phone, company size and industry before any number appears. Screenshot both side by side and you’ve captured the entire strategic difference between the two companies — one prices a product, the other prices a negotiation.

“I’ve only got 8 employees, all part-time. I’m saving $57/month. They’ve been pretty responsive when I’ve reached out.”2↑ · u/Weird_Bottle4630 · thread · after switching ADP → Gusto
“You can probably get ADP Run or Gusto for cheaper, but you’re going to get what you pay for.”2↑ · u/CandleJazzlike4071 · thread · the case for service tiers

Anecdotal but directional: switchers report saving tens of dollars monthly at sub-10 headcount, while ADP’s case strengthens with complexity — exactly what its quote-only model prices for.

When ADP wins

  • Regulated and compliance-heavy industries. ADP’s depth in certified payroll, union rules, garnishments and multi-jurisdiction reporting is what four decades of enterprise payroll buys — Gusto simply doesn’t play there.
  • Gnarly tax situations. Multi-entity structures, heavy multi-state complexity, industries with special withholding: the quote-only price includes humans who’ve seen your edge case before.

The switching costs nobody mentions

Whoever runs payroll on December 31 issues the W-2s, so mid-year switches mean importing year-to-date history perfectly or filing from two systems. The clean move is a January 1 cutover, with quarter starts as the fallback — and it’s the single strongest reason not to let a payroll decision drift into Q4.
